Merlot Malbec Cabernet 2014

92 Points

Seductive bouquet of dark red berry fruit, chocolate, fresh clove and ripe tobacco; violets, gun metal and dark rose; a complex and beguiling bouquet with a layer of intrigue and mystery. Dry, firm, youthful, fruity and quite complex – flavours of dark berries and raspberry with some bitter chocolate and marmite; plenty of tannins and acidity and oak, a lengthy finish. A wine that needs decanting for service or cellar time to allow the elements to integrate – through 2022.

Eaton Merlot Malbec Cabernet 2014

Score: 95 ★★★★★

Dense, silken-textured and warming red with ripe plum, blackcurrant, raspberry, chocolate/mocha and liquorice flavours. An attractive wine, with an appealing savoury complexity. Surprisingly accessible now but should develop well with bottle age.

Eaton Merlot Malbec Cabernet 2014

4 ½ Stars
The 2014 vintage (4.5*) is rare – only 540 bottles were produced. Grown in the Eaton Family Vineyard, in the Omaka Valley, it is a blend of Merlot (85 per cent), Malbec (10 per cent) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5 per cent), fermented with indigenous yeasts, matured for a year in French oak barrels, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Dark and youthful in colour, it is a powerful red with concentrated, ripe plum, blackcurrant, spice and nut flavours, fine-grained tannins, and strong personality. Well worth cellaring, it should be at its best 2020+.
